Destination: Los Cabos

Destination: Los Cabos

One of Mexico’s top destinations, Los Cabos is situated at the southernmost tip of the sunny Baja California peninsula, where the mountains and desert meet the glittering Sea of Cortez. The Spanish phrase “Los Cabos” means “the capes” – a reference to two popular resort cities in the region, luxe and lively Cabo San Lucas and low-key, culturally-rich San José del Cabo, connected by the 20 miles of beaches known as the Los Cabos corridor. The dual destinations offer the perfect winter escape for sun seekers – balmy beaches, outdoor adventure (in, on, and out of the turquoise waters), plus award-winning Baja cuisine.

STAY

Minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas, the five-star  Waldorf Astoria los Cabos Pedregal is Mexico’s first Waldorf Astoria property and was named the #1 Resort in Western Mexico by Condé Nast Traveler readers in 2024. It’s ultra-private, accessible by the country’s only privately-owned Dos Mares tunnel. Situated on 24 pristine beachfront acres, the property was built into Pedregal Mountain, so each of the 119 guestrooms boast expansive ocean views. For the ultimate in luxury, a three-bedroom beachfront presidential villa features its own infinity pool and dedicated beach access, plus a personal butler at your service.

Built in 1956, San José del Cabo’s glamorous One&Only Palmilla holds two Michelin keys and has a Hollywood history unlike any other in Los Cabos. Originally the private home of Don Abelardo Rodriguez, son of Mexico’s then-President, and his film actress wife Lucille Bremmer, it was only accessible by helicopter or yacht until the 1970s. This made it a popular retreat for Hollywood stars, including John Wayne and Lucille Ball. The meticulously preserved hacienda-style property boasts plenty of authentic Mexican charm, first-class service (personal butler service to all rooms), and one of the area’s few swimmable beaches. Plus, amenities include a Jack Nicklaus golf course, Market restaurant by three Michelin starred Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and 20,000-square-foot luxury spa

EAT

Los Cabos first and only Michelin-starred restaurant, oceanfront Cocina de Autor at the Grand Velas hotel, offers a globally-inspired tasting-menu by Executive Chef Sidney Schutte that draws inspiration from his time in Europe, Asia, and beyond. The most coveted tables are on the terrace or request the chef’s table for a more intimate experience.

No visit to Los Cabos is complete without a visit to iconic Flora Farms, a working 25-acre organic farm and farm-to-table restaurant just north of San José del Cabo. Flora’s Field Kitchen, recognized Green Michelin Star for its sustainability efforts, serves up a menu of seasonal dishes prepared with produce grown onsite and meat and dairy from a nearby 150-acre ranch. Don’t miss the Farmarita Margarita, made with freshly squeezed carrot juice.

In the heart of Cabo San Lucas, Sunset Monalisa stuns with panoramic views of the famous natural rock arch, El Arco, as the backdrop to Chef Hector Morales’ Mediterranean Baja fusion cuisine. Considered one of the most romantic restaurants in the world, make a golden hour reservation for two to catch the sunset while enjoying the seven-course prix fixe Chef’s Journey.

DRINK

Cocktail bars are dime a dozen in Los Cabos, venture off the beaten path (literally, crossing a dry river bed) to Acre Resort’s acclaimed Acre Restaurant and Cocktail Bar in San José del Cabo. The two-story restaurant’s mixologists craft innovative tequila-based signature cocktails and more, utilizing produce from the 25-acre property. Bring a bottle of the resort’s own small-batch La Tierra de Acre mezcal home as a memento. Head back to Flora Farms to sip expertly curated Mexican (and Napa) wines by the glass and bottle at the charming El Winery Bar y Café, which also retails single origin specialty coffee. Want to learn more about Mexico’s native spirits? Tiger Woods’ new The Woods Cabo at Diamante Resort in Cabo San Lucas hosts a weekly spirits class featuring a tasting of three premium tequilas or mezcals paired with a canapé from Executive Chef Larbi Dahrouch.

DO

Water activities are synonymous with a Los Cabos vacation. 39-acre Santa Maria Bay is a protected sanctuary with pristine white sand beaches and calm waters that are ideal for snorkeling, paddle boarding, and kayaking. Los Cabos’ most famous natural landmark, El Arco or The Arch, is best experienced via a guided tour in a glass-bottom boat to catch a glimpse of the vibrant marine life. On the east side, Monuments Beach or Playa Monumento is a left pointbreak paradise for surfers and bodyboarders. The Sea of Cortez offers world-class fishing, attracting avid fishermen hoping to hook a 200+ lb marlin, which are plentiful in the region. For those seeking exciting animal encounters, whale watching season runs December through April and thrill-seekers can swim alongside whale sharks.
